What Is MySalam?
MySalam (Skim Perlindungan Masyarakat) is a free takaful insurance scheme initiated by the Malaysian government to provide a financial safety net for lower-income Malaysians. It is fully funded by the government — you pay nothing, and there is nothing to sign up for if you are already eligible.
The scheme provides two types of protection:
A one-time cash payment if you are diagnosed with any of the 50 covered critical illnesses. Paid directly to your registered bank account within 7 days of claim approval. Covers cancer, heart attack, stroke, kidney failure, and 46 other conditions.
RM50 per day if you are admitted to a government hospital, up to a maximum of 14 days per year (RM700 total per year). The claim is submitted after discharge.
Why takaful and not conventional insurance? MySalam is structured as takaful (Islamic cooperative insurance) to be compliant with Islamic finance principles, making it accessible and acceptable to all Malaysians including Muslims. Non-Muslims are equally eligible and covered.

Use both. If you are 50 or older and in the B40 group, PeKa B40 gives you free health screenings to catch problems early. MySalam then covers you financially if a serious diagnosis follows. They complement each other.
Pro Tips
Register a bank account linked to BSH/BPR
Payouts are sent to the bank account registered under your government assistance scheme. If this account is dormant or closed, update it through the relevant government portal or contact MySalam's careline before making a claim.
Claim as soon as possible after diagnosis
While MySalam does not publicly specify a deadline for claims after diagnosis, submit promptly to avoid complications. Keep all medical documents (discharge notes, diagnosis reports, doctor's statements) safely stored.
You can claim for both in the same year
If you are hospitalised AND later diagnosed with a critical illness in the same year, you can claim both the hospitalisation allowance AND the RM8,000 critical illness payout. They are separate benefits.
Pre-existing conditions do not disqualify you
MySalam does not exclude coverage based on pre-existing conditions. If you are enrolled and are diagnosed with a covered illness — even one you had before — you can still claim.
Keep a copy of your discharge note immediately
Hospitals sometimes lose records or issue replacements that take weeks. Get your discharge note before leaving the hospital. Photograph it. The claim process is much smoother with original documentation.
Frequently Asked Questions
I am self-employed. Am I eligible for MySalam?
Yes. Employment status does not affect MySalam eligibility. The key criteria are citizenship, age (18–65), and household income (RM24,000/year or below). Self-employed individuals, gig workers, and the unemployed are all eligible if their income qualifies. Ensure you are registered as a BSH/BPR recipient or through PADU to be enrolled.
Do I need to apply for MySalam or will I be automatically enrolled?
If you are a BSH/BPR recipient or your data is in PADU and your household income qualifies, you are automatically enrolled — no manual application needed. Check your status at mysalam.com.my by entering your IC number. If you are not enrolled and believe you should be, call 1-300-888-938.
My household income just went above RM24,000. Am I still covered?
Coverage is reviewed periodically based on the latest government income data (BSH/BPR lists and PADU). If your income has risen significantly, you may be removed from the scheme at the next review cycle. Check your status at mysalam.com.my to confirm current coverage.
Can I claim MySalam if I was treated at a private hospital?
The hospitalisation allowance (RM50/day) is specifically for treatment at government hospitals. The critical illness payout (RM8,000) is for the diagnosis of a covered illness — the treatment location may matter for the Doctor's Statement form. Contact MySalam at 1-300-888-938 to confirm the exact requirements for your specific situation.
My claim was rejected. What can I do?
Contact MySalam via the careline (1-300-888-938) or email (info@mysalam.com.my) to understand why the claim was rejected. Common reasons include missing documents, incorrect form completion, or a condition not matching the covered 50 illnesses. You can appeal or resubmit with corrected documentation.
Is MySalam the same as SOCSO?
No. SOCSO (PERKESO) is a separate social security scheme for employees — contributions are deducted from your salary. SOCSO covers workplace injuries, employment injury, and provides EIS (unemployment insurance). MySalam is a free government takaful scheme for B40 Malaysians covering critical illness and hospitalisation, regardless of employment status. You can benefit from both.
How many times can I claim the RM8,000 critical illness payout?
The RM8,000 is a one-time payout per covered illness diagnosis. If you are diagnosed with two separate covered illnesses at different times, you may be able to claim twice (once per illness). The hospitalisation allowance is separate and can be claimed each year (up to 14 days per year). Confirm exact limits with MySalam for your specific situation.
What if my bank account registered with BSH/BPR is closed?
You will need to update your bank account before the payout can be processed. Contact MySalam at 1-300-888-938 to arrange an update. Do this before submitting your claim to avoid delays.
