How PTPTN Repayment Works

PTPTN (Perbadanan Tabung Pendidikan Tinggi Nasional) provides student loans for higher education. Unlike conventional bank loans, PTPTN charges a service charge (caj khidmat) of 1% per annum — not compound interest. This makes it one of the cheapest forms of borrowing in Malaysia.

When does repayment start?

Repayment begins 6 months after you graduate (or withdraw from your programme). You should receive a repayment schedule notification from PTPTN — but many borrowers miss this because contact details aren't updated. Log in to MyPTPTN to confirm your repayment start date and monthly instalment amount.

Standard Repayment Terms

Loan Amount Repayment Period Monthly Instalment (approx.)
RM10,000 – RM20,000 10 years RM90 – RM185/month
RM20,000 – RM40,000 15 years RM125 – RM250/month
RM40,000 – RM60,000 15 years RM250 – RM380/month
RM60,000 – RM80,000 20 years RM280 – RM380/month

The exact amount depends on your loan balance and repayment schedule. Log in to ptptn.gov.my or the MyPTPTN app to see your exact figure.

Tiered service charge: Borrowers who graduated before a certain year may have different service charge rates. Check your loan agreement (surat perjanjian) for the exact rate applicable to you. Most modern PTPTN loans are at 1% per annum.

What Happens When You Miss Payments — Timeline

PTPTN escalates gradually. Missing one payment won't destroy your life — but ignoring multiple missed payments will.

Important: The exact timeline varies. PTPTN has discretion in when they escalate. Some borrowers report being blacklisted after 3 months; others after 6. Don't wait to find out — the moment you know you can't make a payment, contact PTPTN proactively.

Consequences in Detail

1. PTPTN Blacklist & Travel Ban

PTPTN submits defaulter names to the Immigration Department (Jabatan Imigresen Malaysia). Once blacklisted:

2. EPF (KWSP) Withdrawal Block

PTPTN can request EPF to block certain Account 2 withdrawals for defaulters. This means:

3. Credit Score Impact (CCRIS / CTOS)

PTPTN reports to Bank Negara's CCRIS system. Missed payments will appear on your CCRIS report, which banks check when you apply for:

A bad CCRIS record from PTPTN arrears can cause loan rejections or result in higher interest rates. Clearing your PTPTN arrears and maintaining consistent payments for 6–12 months will improve your CCRIS standing.

4. Salary Deduction (via Employer)

PTPTN can request your employer to deduct your PTPTN repayment directly from your salary. This is called potongan gaji melalui majikan. If your employer receives such a notice, they are legally required to comply.

The most impactful consequence for most people is the travel ban. Many Malaysians only discover they're blacklisted when they attempt to travel or renew their passport. Check your status proactively — see below.

How to Check Your PTPTN Status

Method 1: MyPTPTN App (Fastest)

  1. Download the MyPTPTN app
Available on the App Store (iOS) and Google Play (Android). Search for "MyPTPTN".
  2. Log in with your IC number and password
If you have forgotten your password, use the "Lupa Kata Laluan" (Forgot Password) option. You'll need access to the email or phone number registered with PTPTN.
  3. Check your account summary
The dashboard shows your outstanding balance, next payment due date, any arrears (tunggakan), and your blacklist status. If you're blacklisted, it will be clearly indicated.

Method 2: i-PTPTN Web Portal

Visit ptptn.gov.my → click "i-PTPTN" → log in with your IC number. Same information as the app.

Method 3: PTPTN Customer Service

Channel Details
Phone 03-2096 8000 (Mon–Fri, 8am–5pm)
Email webmaster@ptptn.gov.my
Counter / Branch Menara PTPTN, KL + branches in all states
Live Chat Via ptptn.gov.my during business hours
Pro tip: Update your contact details (phone number, email, home address) in the MyPTPTN app. Many borrowers miss payment reminders because their registered details are from their student days — an old university email or parents' home address.

How to Pay Your Arrears

Once you know the overdue amount, pay it as soon as possible. Every month of delay adds more outstanding charges.

Payment Methods

Method How Processing Time
MyPTPTN App (FPX) Log in → "Bayaran" → online banking/FPX Real-time
i-PTPTN Web Portal ptptn.gov.my → "Bayaran" → FPX Real-time
Online banking (bill payment) Add PTPTN as biller. Use your IC number as reference 1–2 business days
ATM / CDM Select "Bayaran Bil" → PTPTN. Enter IC number 1–2 business days
Post office (Pos Malaysia) Bring IC and cash or debit card to any Pos Malaysia 1–3 business days
PTPTN counter Walk in to any PTPTN branch with IC Same day
Pay via MyPTPTN app for fastest processing. Real-time payments mean your blacklist clearance request can be submitted the same day. Counter payments also work well if you need immediate confirmation.

What to Pay

When you have arrears, you have two options:

Applying for Deferment (Penangguhan Pembayaran)

If you genuinely cannot pay — because you're unemployed, have low income, or are still studying — PTPTN offers deferment. This pauses your repayment obligation without you being classified as a defaulter.

Who Qualifies for Deferment?

Category Eligibility Supporting Documents
Still studying (full-time) Enrolled in a full-time programme at an accredited institution Student confirmation letter from university
Unemployed Currently not working, registered with EIS (PERKESO) or has proof of unemployment KWSP / EIS statement, resignation letter, or statutory declaration
Low income Gross monthly income below RM2,000 Latest salary slip or employer letter
Medical / disability Serious illness or disability preventing work Medical report from government hospital / specialist
Financial hardship Facing acute financial difficulty (case-by-case basis) Supporting documents as requested by PTPTN

How to Apply for Deferment

  1. Log in to MyPTPTN app or i-PTPTN portal
Navigate to "Permohonan" (Applications) → "Penangguhan Pembayaran" (Payment Deferment).
  2. Select your reason for deferment
Choose from the dropdown: masih belajar, menganggur, pendapatan rendah, kesihatan, etc.
  3. Upload supporting documents
Scan or photograph your documents clearly. File size limits apply — compress large PDFs if needed.
  4. Submit and wait for approval
PTPTN typically processes deferment applications within 5–10 working days. You'll receive an SMS or email notification. Check your application status via the app.
Important: Apply for deferment BEFORE you miss payments, not after. If you've already missed payments, pay the arrears first (or negotiate a partial payment) and then apply for deferment going forward. Deferment doesn't automatically clear past arrears.

Restructuring Your Repayment Plan

If your monthly instalment is too high for your current income, you can apply to restructure your repayment plan (penstrukturan semula). This extends your repayment period and reduces your monthly payment.

Income-Based Repayment

PTPTN offers an income-based repayment schedule tied to your gross monthly income:

Gross Monthly Income Monthly Repayment Rate Notes
Below RM1,000 Eligible for deferment May qualify for full deferment
RM1,000 – RM2,000 2% of gross income Min. RM20/month
RM2,001 – RM3,000 4% of gross income RM80 – RM120/month
RM3,001 – RM5,000 6% of gross income RM180 – RM300/month
RM5,001 – RM10,000 8% of gross income RM400 – RM800/month
Above RM10,000 Standard instalment Full repayment schedule applies

To apply for income-based repayment, submit a restructuring application via MyPTPTN with your latest salary slip (3 months) or EPF statement as proof of income.

This is PTPTN's preferred option for borrowers who are employed but struggling. A reduced monthly payment is better for both parties than a default. Apply before you miss payments.

How to Get Removed from the PTPTN Blacklist

Once you resolve your arrears, PTPTN will submit a request to the Immigration Department to lift your travel ban. This is the process:

  1. Clear your arrears or enter an approved repayment arrangement
Pay all outstanding instalments and penalty charges in full via any payment method above. Alternatively, if full payment is not possible, contact PTPTN at 03-2096 8000 to negotiate a restructuring agreement. Once PTPTN approves the arrangement, they will initiate the blacklist removal even without full payment.
  2. PTPTN updates your account status
After your payment clears (usually same day for FPX/app), PTPTN marks your account as settled or in good standing. This triggers the removal process.
  3. PTPTN submits removal request to Immigration
PTPTN sends a removal request (permohonan pelepasan sekatan imigresen) to the Immigration Department. This typically happens within 1–3 working days of your payment being confirmed.
  4. Immigration Department processes the removal
The Immigration Department updates their records. This takes approximately 3–5 working days from when PTPTN submits the request.
  5. Verify your status before travelling
Check your status via the MyPTPTN app. For the travel ban specifically, you can verify with Immigration at imigresen.gov.my or call 03-8880 1000. Do not assume removal has happened — confirm before booking flights.
Allow at least 5–7 working days after settling your arrears before attempting to renew your passport or travel. Even after PTPTN confirms removal, Immigration's system takes time to update. If you have urgent travel, visit a PTPTN branch in person for same-day priority processing, then follow up with Immigration directly.

Need to Travel Urgently?

If you have an emergency (medical treatment, work assignment, family bereavement) and are blacklisted, visit PTPTN headquarters in KL or your nearest PTPTN branch in person. Explain your situation. PTPTN can issue a surat pengesahan pembayaran (payment confirmation letter) that you can present to Immigration to request a temporary travel exemption.

Full Settlement — 10% Discount

PTPTN periodically runs promotions offering a 10% discount on your outstanding balance if you settle your entire loan in full. These campaigns are usually announced on PTPTN's website and social media.

When the 10% discount is active: If your outstanding balance is RM30,000 and a 10% discount campaign is running, you only need to pay RM27,000 to settle your loan completely. This is the best deal PTPTN offers.

To check if a discount campaign is currently running, visit ptptn.gov.my or the MyPTPTN app. Campaigns are time-limited — typically running for 1–3 months.

Frequently Asked Questions

I missed one payment. Am I blacklisted?
Not immediately. One missed payment typically results in reminder notices. Blacklisting generally happens after 3+ consecutive missed payments. However, don't assume you're safe — pay the arrears as soon as possible and log in to MyPTPTN to check your actual status.
My passport renewal was rejected. Is it definitely because of PTPTN?
Passport renewals can be blocked for multiple reasons — PTPTN, outstanding court orders, other government debt. Contact PTPTN first to check your blacklist status. If PTPTN confirms you're not on their blacklist, check with other agencies (LHDN for tax debt, court orders via Jabatan Kehakiman). Immigration counters can also tell you the specific reason for rejection.
I've been living abroad and missed payments for years. What do I do?
Log in to MyPTPTN to see your total outstanding amount including arrears and penalty charges. Contact PTPTN at +603-2096 8000 (international callers) or email webmaster@ptptn.gov.my to discuss a repayment arrangement. You can make payments online via FPX from overseas using a Malaysian bank account. If your Malaysian bank accounts are inactive, contact PTPTN for alternative payment options. The earlier you contact them, the more flexible they can be.
Can PTPTN garnish my salary without a court order?
PTPTN can request your employer to deduct repayments via a formal notice — this does not require a court order. It is authorized under the PTPTN Act 1997. However, actual legal proceedings (suing for the full debt, asset seizure) require a court order and are only used in extreme cases of prolonged default. If you're contacted by PTPTN about salary deduction, respond promptly — an agreed repayment plan is always preferable.
How long does the travel ban take to lift after I pay?
Allow 5–7 working days from when your payment clears. PTPTN submits the removal request to Immigration within 1–3 days of payment confirmation, and Immigration takes another 3–5 days to process. Always verify via MyPTPTN and imigresen.gov.my before travelling. If you have urgent travel, visit a PTPTN branch in person and request expedited processing.
Does PTPTN affect my credit score with banks?
Yes. PTPTN reports to Bank Negara's Central Credit Reference Information System (CCRIS). Missed PTPTN payments will show as bad debt on your CCRIS report, which banks check for loan applications. Once you clear the arrears and maintain consistent payments for 6–12 months, your CCRIS record improves. CTOS may also capture PTPTN-related legal proceedings if PTPTN has filed suit against you.
I can't afford any payment at all. What should I do?
Contact PTPTN immediately at 03-2096 8000. Explain your situation honestly. PTPTN has hardship deferment options for genuinely low-income borrowers (earning below RM2,000/month). The worst thing you can do is ignore it — that accelerates blacklisting and legal action. PTPTN is government-backed and generally willing to work with borrowers who engage proactively.
Can I withdraw from EPF Account 3 (Akaun Fleksibel) to pay PTPTN?
Yes — EPF Account 3 (Akaun Fleksibel) can be withdrawn at any time for any purpose, including PTPTN repayment. However, be mindful that Account 3 is meant for retirement savings — only use it for PTPTN if you are facing blacklisting consequences that affect your livelihood (e.g. travel ban blocking work travel). See the EPF Akaun Fleksibel withdrawal guide for the process.
