What is Akaun Fleksibel (Akaun 3)? Since 11 May 2024, EPF members have three accounts instead of two. Akaun Fleksibel receives 10% of every new contribution and can be withdrawn at any time, for any reason, with no documents required. Unlike Akaun Persaraan (locked until 55) or Akaun Sejahtera (purpose-restricted), Akaun Fleksibel has no strings attached — but withdrawing it permanently removes those funds from your retirement compounding.

The Three-Account Structure — Quick Context

Every EPF contribution you make is split across three accounts. Understanding which account you're withdrawing from matters:

⚠ Akaun Fleksibel started at RM0 for everyone. This account was introduced in May 2024. If you've been working for years, most of your EPF balance is in Akaun Persaraan and Akaun Sejahtera — not Akaun Fleksibel. Akaun Fleksibel only accumulates from contributions made after May 2024. Check your balance in i-Akaun before assuming there's a large amount to withdraw.

Who Can Withdraw?

Akaun Fleksibel withdrawals are available to:

No reason needed. Unlike Akaun Sejahtera withdrawals (which require proof of purpose like housing or education), Akaun Fleksibel withdrawals require zero documentation. No receipts. No approval. Just your registered bank account.

Step 0: Check Your Akaun Fleksibel Balance

Before withdrawing, check how much is in Akaun Fleksibel. The most common surprise: people expect thousands but find only a few hundred ringgit, because the account only started accumulating in May 2024.

Method 1: i-Akaun app (fastest)

Method 2: i-Akaun website

Method 3: EPF kiosk or counter

How to Withdraw from Akaun Fleksibel

Recommended
i-Akaun App

Alternative
i-Akaun Website
Same processing as the app but via browser at i.kwsp.gov.my. Good option if you don't have a smartphone.
Walk-in
EPF Counter
Visit any EPF branch with your MyKad. Slower — use only if you have issues with online access or need to update your bank account.

Step-by-Step: Withdraw via i-Akaun App

This is the fastest method. The entire process takes about 3 minutes. You'll need the i-Akaun app installed and your registered mobile number for OTP.

  1. Open the i-Akaun app and log in
Use your MyKad number (IC number) and your i-Akaun password. If you've forgotten your password, tap "Forgot Password" and reset via OTP to your registered mobile number. First-time users: register at i.kwsp.gov.my or at any EPF kiosk.
  2. Go to "Withdrawals" (Pengeluaran)
From the home screen, tap the Withdrawals menu. You'll see options for different withdrawal types. Select Akaun Fleksibel Withdrawal (Pengeluaran Akaun Fleksibel).
  3. Confirm your registered bank account
EPF pays out to your registered bank account only. Your current registered bank and account number will be displayed. If it's wrong or outdated, stop here — update your bank details first (see below). EPF will NOT pay into an unregistered account.
  4. Enter the withdrawal amount
Enter any amount between RM 50 (minimum) and your full Akaun Fleksibel balance. You don't have to withdraw everything — partial withdrawals are fine. The app shows your current balance so you don't overshoot.
  5. Review and confirm the details
A summary screen shows: withdrawal amount, bank account, and expected processing time. Double-check the bank account number — EPF cannot reverse a payment sent to the wrong account if the account details were correct on file.
  6. Verify with OTP
EPF will send a one-time password (OTP) to your registered mobile number. Enter the OTP within 5 minutes. This is the final authorisation step.
  7. Done — wait for your money
You'll receive a confirmation screen and a notification. The money will be credited to your bank account within 1–3 business days. You can check the status in the app under "Transaction History" (Sejarah Transaksi).
Processing time reality: Most withdrawals submitted before 3pm on a business day are credited the next business day. Weekend or public holiday submissions are processed the next working day. EPF's official timeline is 3 business days but it's often faster.

Registering or Updating Your Bank Account

EPF can only pay out to a Malaysian bank account in your own name. You must register it before you can withdraw. Most members already have one registered, but if yours is outdated (e.g. old account, changed banks), update it first.

How to register or update your bank account

⚠ Joint accounts and third-party accounts are NOT accepted. The bank account must be a sole account registered under your own name (matching your MyKad). EPF will reject payments to joint accounts or accounts belonging to family members.

The Real Cost: What You're Actually Giving Up

Akaun Fleksibel withdrawals are legal, easy, and sometimes necessary. But the compound cost is significant. EPF has consistently declared dividends of 5–6% per year. Every ringgit you withdraw today cannot earn dividends for the next 20–30 years.

Example: Withdrawing RM 2,000 Today

Amount withdrawn RM 2,000
Assumed EPF dividend rate 6% per year
Years until retirement (age 30 → 55) 25 years
What RM 2,000 would grow to (compounded) ≈ RM 8,584
True cost of this withdrawal ≈ RM 6,584 in retirement savings lost

EPF's own estimate: withdrawing RM 2,000 today costs over RM 11,000 in retirement savings over 30 years (at a 6% dividend rate). The math compounds against you hard.

⚠ Treat Akaun Fleksibel as a true emergency fund. Use it for genuine emergencies — unexpected medical bills, job loss bridging, urgent repairs. Do not use it as a monthly top-up to your lifestyle. The one-per-month limit exists for a reason.

Pro Tips

1. Build your Akaun Fleksibel as an emergency fund — then leave it

The ideal approach: let Akaun Fleksibel accumulate for 1–2 years until it covers 3 months of expenses. Then only touch it for true emergencies. It earns EPF dividends (typically 5–6%/year) tax-free while it sits — that's better than most savings accounts.

2. Don't withdraw small amounts frequently

The one-per-month limit means every withdrawal is your only shot that month. Withdrawing RM100 every month is worse than withdrawing RM1,200 once in a genuine emergency — you lose dividend compounding on 12 separate small amounts over time.

3. Check your balance before assuming it's large

If you started working before May 2024, your Akaun Fleksibel balance represents only contributions since May 2024. For someone earning RM5,000/month, that's roughly RM 2,400/year going into Akaun Fleksibel (RM5,000 × 24% total contribution × 10% Akaun Fleksibel share × 12 months ÷ 2). After 1.5 years, expect RM 3,000–4,000, not RM 20,000.

4. Keep your bank account and mobile number updated in i-Akaun

EPF uses your registered mobile number for OTP and your registered bank account for payouts. If your number or bank has changed, update it before you need to make an emergency withdrawal — not during the emergency.

5. Verify in Malay: "Akaun Fleksibel" vs "Akaun Ketiga"

The account is officially called Akaun Fleksibel in the i-Akaun app and on EPF's website. You may also see it referred to as Akaun Ketiga (Third Account) informally. They are the same thing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I withdraw from Akaun Fleksibel more than once per month?
No. EPF allows only one Akaun Fleksibel withdrawal per calendar month, per member. If you've already made a withdrawal in March, you cannot make another until April. There is no override for this limit.
Is the withdrawal taxable? Will LHDN know?
No, EPF withdrawals are completely tax-exempt under Malaysian income tax law — regardless of the amount. You do not need to declare EPF withdrawals on your tax return. LHDN is aware of EPF withdrawals but they are exempt from tax by statute.
My Akaun Fleksibel balance is RM0. Why?
Akaun Fleksibel only started receiving contributions from 11 May 2024. If you made no EPF contributions after that date (e.g. you were self-employed without voluntary contributions, or left employment before then), your balance will be RM0. If you're employed and contributing, check that you've been with your employer after May 2024 — contributions take 1–2 months to appear.
Can I withdraw to someone else's bank account?
No. EPF only pays to a bank account registered in your own name. Joint accounts are not accepted. Third-party accounts are not accepted. This is a fraud prevention measure and cannot be waived.
What if I need money urgently and my i-Akaun is locked?
Visit any EPF branch (Ibu Pejabat KWSP or branch offices) with your MyKad. Counter staff can assist with account unlocking and same-day withdrawal applications. For i-Akaun password resets without a registered mobile, you must visit in person.
How long does a withdrawal actually take?
EPF's official processing time is 1–3 business days from the date of approval. In practice, most withdrawals submitted before 3pm on a working day are credited to your bank the next business day. Submissions on Friday afternoon or before a public holiday take longer — plan accordingly.
Does Akaun Fleksibel still earn EPF dividends?
Yes. The balance in Akaun Fleksibel earns the same annual dividend as your other EPF accounts. The dividend is declared once a year (usually in February or March) and credited to your account. This is why leaving it alone to compound is financially smarter than withdrawing every month.
What happens to Akaun Fleksibel when I turn 55?
At age 55, all three EPF accounts (Persaraan, Sejahtera, and Fleksibel) are merged and you can withdraw the full amount or convert to a monthly pension arrangement. The Akaun Fleksibel distinction disappears at 55 — it all becomes your retirement savings.
I'm self-employed. Can I access Akaun Fleksibel?
Yes, if you contribute to EPF voluntarily via i-Saraan (formerly known as 1Malaysia Retirement Savings Scheme) or Caruman Sukarela. Voluntary contributions since May 2024 are split across the three accounts just like mandatory contributions. If you only contributed before May 2024, your balance would have been in the old 2-account structure — it has since been migrated to Akaun Persaraan and Akaun Sejahtera, with Akaun Fleksibel starting at RM0.
