What Is GrabCar / E-Hailing?

GrabCar is Grab's ride-hailing service in Malaysia — passengers book rides via the Grab app, and drivers (like you) accept and complete trips. Drivers are independent contractors, not employees. You set your own hours.

In Malaysia, e-hailing is regulated by Suruhanjaya Pengangkutan Awam Darat (SPAD), now under the Jabatan Pengangkutan Jalan (JPJ). This means you need a legal licence — the Lesen PSV (Public Service Vehicle) — before you can legally drive for Grab or any other e-hailing platform (InDrive, AirAsia Ride, etc.).

Driving without a PSV licence is an offence under the Land Public Transport Act 2010. Grab is required to verify your PSV licence before approving your account.

You cannot legally drive e-hailing without a PSV licence. Grab will not activate your driver account until you upload a valid PSV licence. There is no workaround.

Driver Eligibility Requirements

Personal Requirements

Requirement Details
Citizenship Malaysian citizen (MyKad required). Permanent Residents (MyPR) may apply — check with JPJ.
Minimum age 21 years old
Maximum age 65 years old (some insurers cap at 65 for e-hailing coverage)
Driving licence Valid Class D full licence (not P or L), held for at least 2 years
Driving record No serious traffic offences. Grab conducts a background check.
Criminal record No criminal record (Grab performs a PDRM background check)
Medical fitness Required for PSV licence — see below
P-licence holders cannot apply. You must have a full Class D licence, not a probationary (P) licence. You need to have passed your full driving test and held the full licence for at least 2 years.

Vehicle Requirements

Your vehicle must meet Grab's and JPJ's standards. Different Grab service tiers have different vehicle requirements.

General Vehicle Requirements (All GrabCar Tiers)

Requirement Details
Vehicle age Maximum 10 years old from manufacture date (some areas: 7 years for certain tiers)
Seating capacity 4–7 passenger seats (excluding driver). Motorcycles are NOT eligible for GrabCar.
Registration Must be registered under your name OR you must have a valid consent letter from the registered owner
Roadworthiness Valid Puspakom inspection certificate (B2 inspection) — mandatory for e-hailing
Road tax Valid and up-to-date
Insurance Must have e-hailing insurance endorsement — standard private car insurance does NOT cover commercial use
E-hailing permit Vehicle must have a valid e-hailing operator permit (registered under JPJ/SPAD)

GrabCar Service Tiers & Vehicle Criteria

Service Vehicle Type Engine Size Age Limit
GrabCar Standard sedan / MPV / hatchback Any Max 10 years
GrabCar Plus Mid-range sedans (Camry, Accord, X70) 1,800cc+ Max 7 years
GrabCar Premium Luxury vehicles (BMW, Mercedes, Volvo) 2,000cc+ Max 5 years

Common eligible vehicles for standard GrabCar: Perodua Myvi, Proton Saga, Proton Persona, Toyota Vios, Honda City, Perodua Axia, Proton X50, Honda Jazz, Toyota Yaris. If your car is a standard sedan or hatchback under 10 years old, it likely qualifies.

Getting Your PSV Licence (Lesen PSV)

The Lesen PSV (Lesen Kenderaan Pengangkutan Awam) is the licence that legally allows you to carry paying passengers. Without it, you cannot drive e-hailing legally. Here's the process:

Step 1: Medical Examination (Peperiksaan Perubatan)

Visit a panel clinic registered with JPJ. Not all clinics are JPJ panels — confirm before going. The medical examination covers:

Cost: RM30–RM80 depending on clinic. The clinic issues a JPJ medical certificate (Sijil Kesihatan JPJ) which you submit with your PSV application.

Validity: The medical certificate is valid for 3 months — complete your PSV application before it expires.

Step 2: PSV Course (Kursus PSV)

You must complete a 1-day JPJ-approved PSV course at an authorised driving institute (Institut Memandu). The course covers:

Cost: RM100–RM200. Book via your nearest JPJ-registered driving school (Institut Memandu / Pusat Memandu Lesen PSV).

Upon completion, you receive a PSV course completion certificate.

Step 3: Apply for PSV Licence at JPJ

Submit your application at a JPJ branch or via the MyJPJ portal/app (if online submission is available in your area). Required documents:

PSV Licence Details

Details
Validity 3 years (renewable)
Renewal fee ~RM200–RM350 (with medical re-exam)
Processing time Same day to 2 weeks depending on JPJ branch
Platform accepted Grab, InDrive, AirAsia Ride, and all other e-hailing platforms in Malaysia
Malay term: Lesen PSV = Lesen Kenderaan Pengangkutan Awam Darat. Some older documents call it "Lesen E-Hailing". It's the same licence.

How Much Can You Earn as a Grab Driver?

Earnings vary widely depending on hours worked, city, time of day, and current incentive campaigns. Here are realistic estimates based on driver community data:

Part-time (20 hrs/wk)
RM800–1,500
per month
Full-time (40–50 hrs/wk)
RM2,500–4,000
per month (gross)
Peak hour bonus
+20–50%
surge pricing
Grab commission
~20–25%
deducted from fare

Typical Fares (Klang Valley)

Trip Distance Typical Fare (GrabCar) Your Cut (~75–80%)
3 km (short) RM7–12 RM5–10
10 km (medium) RM15–25 RM12–20
25 km (KLIA–KL) RM45–70 RM35–55
Gross ≠ net. The RM2,500–4,000 figure above is BEFORE deducting fuel, car maintenance, insurance, and other costs. See the Expenses section below for a realistic net calculation.

Incentive Programmes

Grab regularly runs weekly incentive campaigns — completing a target number of trips in a week earns a bonus. These are posted in the Grab Driver app each week. New drivers often qualify for higher incentive tiers during their first month. Track your incentive targets daily to maximise earnings.

Costs and Expenses to Factor In

Many new drivers underestimate running costs. Here's a realistic monthly breakdown for a full-time Grab driver in the Klang Valley:

Expense Monthly Estimate Notes
Fuel RM500–900 At current RON95 prices. Higher if driving high-mileage.
Vehicle maintenance RM200–400 Oil changes, tyres, brakes wear faster with e-hailing use
E-hailing insurance endorsement RM20–40/month (Annual cost RM250–500 spread monthly)
Grab commission ~20–25% Already deducted before you receive payment
Road tax RM15–25/month (Annual cost spread monthly)
Parking RM50–150 Depends on operating area
Phone plan / data RM50–80 Need consistent data for the app
Total monthly expenses RM835–1,595 Plus vehicle depreciation
Net earnings estimate (full-time): Gross RM2,500–4,000 minus expenses RM835–1,595 = net RM905–3,165/month. The wide range reflects different vehicles, driving styles, and operating hours. Efficient drivers with fuel-efficient cars (Myvi, Axia) on the higher end.

Vehicle depreciation is the hidden cost most drivers ignore. E-hailing use puts significantly more kilometres on your car than personal use, accelerating depreciation. Factor this in if you're doing a long-term financial calculation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a PSV licence if I just want to do GrabFood deliveries?
No. GrabFood deliveries (on motorcycle) require a GDEX/e-hailing motorcycle permit, not a PSV licence. PSV licences are for carrying passengers. If you only want to deliver food using a motorbike, the requirements are different — check Grab's delivery partner sign-up page.
Can I use a car registered under my company (Sdn Bhd) to drive Grab?
Yes, with a consent letter from the company and proper documentation showing you're authorised to operate the vehicle. The vehicle must still meet all other requirements (Puspakom, e-hailing insurance, JPJ registration). Some insurers require the policyholder to be the driver — check with your insurer.
Can I drive for both Grab and InDrive (or other platforms) simultaneously?
Yes. Your PSV licence and JPJ e-hailing vehicle registration covers you across all e-hailing platforms. Many drivers use multiple apps simultaneously to reduce idle time. Make sure you only accept one booking at a time.
What happens if I get into an accident while on a Grab trip?
Your e-hailing insurance endorsement covers you for third-party liability and your vehicle during active e-hailing trips. Notify your insurer immediately. Report the incident in the Grab Driver app too. Do NOT try to claim under your standard private car policy — it may be voided if the insurer discovers you were operating commercially without the endorsement.
How long does the full Grab driver registration take from start to finish?
Realistically, 2–6 weeks total: medical (1 day), PSV course (1 day), JPJ processing (1–14 days), Puspakom booking (3–7 days wait), insurance endorsement (1–3 days), Grab verification (3–7 days). If you book everything in parallel from day one, you can be driving in 3 weeks. Do not leave Grab verification to last — start uploading documents as soon as your PSV licence arrives.
Do I need to declare income from Grab to LHDN?
Yes. Grab driver income is taxable in Malaysia. You are considered a self-employed person. Declare your income under B4 (Business Income) in your BE tax form. You can deduct legitimate business expenses (fuel, maintenance, insurance, phone) against your gross income. Keep your receipts. If your net income is below the chargeable income threshold, you may not owe tax, but you should still file.
What if my Grab application is rejected?
The most common rejection reasons are: expired or unclear documents, PSV licence not yet visible in the JPJ system (wait 1–2 weeks after collecting your licence), vehicle failing Puspakom inspection, or a criminal background check flag. Check the rejection reason in the app, fix the specific issue, and resubmit. Contact Grab support at grab.com/my/help if the reason is unclear.
Is there a minimum number of trips I must complete per month?
Grab does not impose a minimum trip requirement. You can drive as little or as much as you want. However, if your account is completely inactive for an extended period (several months), Grab may deactivate it — contact Grab support to reactivate.
