Important order of operations: You MUST renew your car insurance first, then your road tax. JPJ requires a valid insurance policy before it will issue road tax. If you reverse the order, you will be stuck.

What Are Road Tax and Car Insurance? (The Basics)

Many Malaysians confuse these two. They are separate obligations, both required annually, and one depends on the other.

ItemMalay TermWhat It IsIssued By
Road Tax Cukai jalan Government licence to drive a vehicle on public roads. Funds road maintenance. JPJ (Road Transport Dept)
Car Insurance Insurans kenderaan Covers damage/loss to your vehicle and third-party liability. Required by law. Insurance company

Renewing your insurance does not automatically renew your road tax, and vice versa. Both must be renewed separately, every year.

Step 1: Renew Your Car Insurance

Do this before touching your road tax. You need a valid policy (or at minimum a cover note) before JPJ will proceed.

How to Renew Insurance

  1. Gather your vehicle details. You'll need your car registration number (no plat), engine number, and chassis number (on your geran / VOC).
  2. Compare quotes. Use MyEG, PolicyStreet, or RinggitPlus to compare premiums across insurers. Premiums can vary 10–20% for the same coverage.
  3. Choose your coverage type. See the coverage comparison table below.
  4. Check your NCD (No Claims Discount) entitlement. Your NCD reduces your premium — protect it. See NCD section below.
  5. Purchase and receive your cover note / policy. Online purchases are instant. The insurer will email your cover note and later mail the full policy document.

Coverage Types — Which Should You Choose?

CoverageYour Car DamageThird PartyTheft/FireBest For
Comprehensive (Komprehensif) Yes Yes Yes New cars, financed cars, cars worth >RM40,000
Third Party, Fire & Theft (TPFT) No (accident) Yes Yes Older cars, moderate risk appetite
Third Party Only (TPO) No Yes No Very old cars worth <RM15,000

Bank requirement: If your car is still under hire purchase (pinjaman), your bank requires comprehensive coverage. Check your loan agreement.

Understanding Your NCD (No Claims Discount)

NCD (also called NCB — No Claims Bonus) is a discount on your insurance premium for every year you don't make a claim. It's one of the most valuable things to protect when driving.

Years Without a ClaimNCD DiscountExample: RM1,200 Base Premium
0 years (new driver/new car)0%RM1,200
1 year25%RM900
2 years30%RM840
3 years38.33%RM740
4 years45%RM660
5+ years55%RM540
NCD is attached to the owner, not the car. If you sell your car, you take your NCD with you. If you buy a used car, you start from 0% NCD for that vehicle. Your NCD also resets to 0% if you make an own-damage claim — think carefully before claiming small amounts.

NCD Protection Add-On

Most insurers offer an NCD protector add-on for a small extra premium. This allows one claim per policy year without losing your NCD. Highly recommended once you've reached 55% NCD — the accumulated discount is worth protecting.

Step 2: Renew Your Road Tax

Once your insurance is active, you can renew your road tax. Choose your preferred channel:

Option A: Online via MyJPJ App (Recommended)

  1. Download the MyJPJ app (Android / iOS). Login with your MyKad number and set up a PIN.
  2. Select "Lesen Kenderaan" → "Cukai Jalan". Enter your vehicle registration number.
  3. Confirm insurance is linked. MyJPJ will verify your existing policy automatically. If it doesn't appear, enter the cover note number manually.
  4. Pay road tax fee via FPX, credit/debit card, or e-wallet. You save RM5 compared to the post office counter rate.
  5. Digital road tax is immediately active. The physical road tax disc (cakera cukai jalan) is mailed to your registered address within 7–14 working days, or you can collect at a post office.

Option B: Online via MyEG

  1. Visit myeg.com.my and log in (create an account if first time).
  2. Select "Road Tax Renewal" and enter your vehicle registration number.
  3. MyEG will also handle insurance renewal in the same transaction if needed.
  4. Pay and receive confirmation. Road tax disc is mailed to your registered address.
  5. Note: MyEG charges a small convenience fee (typically RM2–RM5) on top of the road tax amount. MyJPJ is slightly cheaper.

Option C: Post Office (Pejabat Pos)

  1. Bring your existing insurance policy or cover note, MyKad, and vehicle registration card (geran).
  2. Go to any Pos Malaysia counter and tell them you want to renew road tax (perbaharui cukai jalan).
  3. Counter staff will verify your insurance and process the road tax.
  4. You receive your road tax disc immediately — no waiting for mail delivery.
  5. Payment by cash, debit card, or credit card depending on the branch.

Option D: JPJ Counter

You can also renew at any JPJ office, but this is rarely necessary — post offices and online channels handle the same transaction faster and closer to home.

Road Tax Rates — Peninsular Malaysia (2026)

Rates are based on engine cubic capacity (CC) for private cars (kereta persendirian). East Malaysia (Sabah/Sarawak) rates are significantly lower.

East Malaysia (Sabah / Sarawak): Road tax rates are lower — roughly 50% of Peninsular rates for most engine sizes. Check the official JPJ rate table for exact Sabah/Sarawak figures.
Electric vehicles (EV): Battery electric vehicles (BEV) are exempt from road tax until 31 December 2025 under the government's EV incentive programme. Check current policy at JPJ for updates beyond 2025.

What If My Road Tax Has Expired?

Expired Less Than 12 Months

Renew immediately through any of the above channels. No special process required beyond the normal renewal. You will need to back-pay from the expiry date (road tax starts from expiry date, not today).

Driving with expired road tax is an offence under the Road Transport Act 1987. Fines (saman) of up to RM3,000 can be issued. JPJ can also clamp or impound your vehicle. Traffic police and JPJ conduct periodic roadblocks specifically checking for expired road tax.

Expired More Than 12 Months

If your road tax has been expired for over 12 months, you must pass a PUSPAKOM B2 inspection before JPJ will issue a new road tax. Take your car to any PUSPAKOM centre; fee is approximately RM50–RM80. Once you receive the B2 clearance, proceed with normal road tax renewal.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I drive immediately after renewing road tax online?
Yes. Once you've paid and received your digital confirmation, the JPJ system updates immediately — your road tax is valid. Traffic police and JPJ enforcement check the database, not the physical disc. You don't need to wait for the physical road tax disc in the mail. Keep your renewal receipt on your phone as a backup just in case.
What is the difference between road tax (cukai jalan) and the road tax disc (cakera cukai jalan)?
Road tax is the licence itself — the permission to drive on public roads, recorded in JPJ's database. The road tax disc is the physical sticker that goes on your windscreen. Since 2015, Malaysia has moved to digital verification — the disc is largely ceremonial. You can legally drive without the disc on your windscreen as long as your road tax is recorded as valid in the JPJ system.
Can I renew my road tax if my car has outstanding summons (saman)?
Yes, you can renew road tax even with outstanding summons — JPJ does not block road tax renewal for unpaid traffic fines. However, when you appear at a JPJ counter or roadblock, officers can see and act on outstanding fines. It's best practice to settle summons before renewal, especially if using the post office (staff sometimes flag this). You can check and pay summons via MySikap, MyEG, or at any post office.
My insurance renewal is coming up but my NCD seems wrong — what should I do?
Request a NCD verification letter from your current insurer, or check via the MyEG portal. If you believe your NCD is incorrectly stated (e.g., you made no claims but your NCD didn't increase), contact your insurer's customer service with your previous policy documents. Disputes over NCD can also be escalated to the Persatuan Insurans Am Malaysia (PIAM) or Bank Negara's OFS (Ombudsman for Financial Services).
Can I renew my road tax for 6 months instead of 12?
Yes. JPJ allows 6-month road tax renewal, though you pay a slightly higher pro-rated rate (not exactly half the annual rate — there's an administrative premium). This is useful if you're planning to sell the car or going abroad for an extended period. The 6-month option is available at post offices and JPJ counters; availability may vary on MyJPJ.
Does my car insurance automatically renew?
No — Malaysian motor insurance does not auto-renew. You will typically receive a renewal notice from your insurer 30–45 days before expiry. You must actively choose to renew (or switch insurers). Do not assume your insurance is still valid without confirming. Driving with expired insurance is also an offence under the Road Transport Act.
What happens to my NCD if I don't own a car for a few years?
Your NCD is preserved for up to 2 years after your last policy expires. If you buy a new car within 2 years, you can claim your previous NCD. Beyond 2 years, your NCD may lapse and reset to 0%. Check with your insurer — some allow reinstatement with proof of prior coverage even after a gap.
