Fastest option: Walk-in to any Urban Transformation Centre (UTC) — Kuala Lumpur, Johor Bahru, Kota Bharu, Kuching, etc. Photo and biometrics are taken on-site. Collection is usually same-day within 1–2 hours.

Method 1: Walk-In (Recommended for Speed)

  1. Gather your documents — current passport and MyKad. That's it for most adults.
  2. Go to an Immigration office, UTC, or authorized renewal centre. UTCs are the fastest option. No appointment needed for walk-ins (though peak periods can mean long queues — avoid festive seasons and school holidays).
  3. Submit documents at the counter. Your photo and biometrics (fingerprints) are taken on-site. No need to bring photos.
  4. Pay the fee — RM200 for adults. Cash and card accepted at most centres.
  5. Collect your new passport. At UTCs: typically the same day, 1–2 hours wait. At regular Immigration offices: 1–3 working days.

Method 2: Online Application (MyOnline Passport Portal)

  1. Access the online portal at imi.gov.my and navigate to passport services, or via the official Malaysia.gov.my portal.
  2. Upload documents and your photo — 35mm × 50mm, white background, no glasses, face clearly visible.
  3. Pay online via FPX or credit/debit card.
  4. You must still attend an Immigration office in person for collection. Biometric verification is done at the office when you collect.
Note: The online application mainly reserves your slot and processes payment. You still physically visit an office for biometrics and to collect the passport. For pure speed, just walk in to a UTC.

Pro Tips — What Travellers Get Wrong

Frequently Asked Questions

How early can I renew my Malaysian passport before it expires?
You can renew your Malaysian passport up to 12 months before its expiry date. There is no restriction on renewing early. The remaining validity of your old passport is not added to your new passport — your new passport will have its own 5-year validity period from the issue date. If you have a trip coming up that requires 6 months passport validity, renew immediately rather than waiting.
Can I use my passport for international travel the same day I collect it?
Yes. Malaysian passports are fully active the moment they are issued — there is no activation period. Once you have collected your new passport from the Immigration counter, you can travel internationally that same day. Make sure to update your travel insurance, airline bookings, and visa applications with your new passport number before departure.
What happens if my passport expires while I am abroad?
Visit the nearest Malaysian High Commission or Embassy immediately. They can issue an Emergency Travel Document (Dokumen Perjalanan Kecemasan / ETD) to allow you to return to Malaysia. The ETD is a single-journey document — it gets you home, but is not a full passport replacement. Upon returning to Malaysia, go to the Immigration Department to renew your passport through the standard process. Emergency documents issued at embassies take 2–4 weeks unless you qualify for express processing.
Do I need to cancel my visa or inform destination countries when renewing my passport?
In most cases, no. Your existing visas (US, Schengen, UK, Australian, etc.) remain valid after you renew your passport — you travel with both your old passport (containing the visa) and your new passport. However, some countries require you to obtain a new visa linked to the new passport. Long-term resident permits (e.g., UK BRP, US Green Card) are separate from your passport and remain valid regardless. Always check the specific requirements of the destination country before travelling.
Can someone collect my passport on my behalf in Malaysia?
Generally no — Malaysian passport collection requires personal attendance and a fingerprint scan. However, there is a limited exception for medical reasons: if you are bedridden or hospitalised, a family member can apply for a home collection service from the Immigration Department with a doctor's letter. For Malaysians overseas, passport renewal is done at the embassy in person, not through a proxy. There is no standard proxy collection system for passports in Malaysia.
My name on my IC has changed (marriage/deed poll). How do I renew my passport?
You must first update your IC to reflect the new name before applying for a passport renewal. Your passport must match your IC. Bring your updated IC, the legal name change document (marriage certificate / deed poll / court order depending on the reason), your old passport, and any other required documents to the Immigration counter. The name on your passport will be updated to match your current IC. If you have pending flights booked in your old name, check with your airline — most allow free name corrections for legal name changes with supporting documents.
