The short version: The easiest way is the MyJPJ app — renew in under 10 minutes from your phone, pay online, and the system updates immediately. Alternatively, walk into any JPJ office, Pos Malaysia (selected branches), or a registered MySikap agent. Bring your MyKad. No photo required for renewal.

Option A: Online via MyJPJ App Recommended

The fastest and cheapest option. The MyJPJ app (by JPJ Malaysia) lets you renew from your phone in under 10 minutes. Your licence is updated in the JPJ database immediately — police and JPJ enforcement check the database, not a physical card.

  1. Download the MyJPJ app from Google Play or the App Store (search "MyJPJ").
  2. Log in using your MyKad IC number and a password. First-time users register with IC number, date of birth, and OTP sent to your registered mobile number.
  3. Tap "Lesen Memandu" → "Perbaharui Lesen" (Renew Licence).
  4. Confirm the displayed licence details are correct — name, IC number, class(es), expiry date.
  5. Select your preferred renewal period (1 year, 3 years, or 5 years where available) and review the fee.
  6. Pay via FPX online banking, credit/debit card, or Touch 'n Go eWallet.
  7. Once payment is confirmed, your licence is renewed. Screenshot or save the receipt for reference.
  8. Your digital licence is now available in the MyJPJ app — you can show it on your phone if stopped at a roadblock.
No physical card needed for renewal. Since 2019, Malaysia recognises the digital driving licence in the MyJPJ app as a legal document. You do not need to collect a new physical card unless you want one (replacement card: RM20 at JPJ counter).

Option B: JPJ Counter Walk-In

If you prefer to renew in person or need to update your address, licence class, or collect a physical card, visit any JPJ office. Counters are generally open Monday–Friday, 8am–5pm (closed 1–2pm for lunch in some states).

  1. Bring your MyKad (original) and your current or expired driving licence.
  2. Take a number at the JPJ counter. Look for the "Lesen Memandu" or "Perbaharui" queue.
  3. Hand your documents to the counter officer and state you want to renew (perbaharui lesen memandu).
  4. Confirm the renewal period you want and pay the fee.
  5. You'll receive a renewal receipt. If you want a new physical card, the officer will take your photo and process a replacement (fee: RM20 extra).
  6. Physical card collection is sometimes same-day at busy offices; sometimes 1–2 weeks. You can drive legally using the receipt + MyJPJ app in the meantime.

Option C: Pos Malaysia (Selected Branches)

Selected Pos Malaysia branches offer driving licence renewal as part of their JPJ agency services. Not all post offices offer this — call your nearest branch first to confirm. The service is identical to renewing at JPJ but closer to home for many people.

  1. Call ahead to confirm your nearest Pos Malaysia branch offers "perbaharui lesen memandu JPJ".
  2. Bring your MyKad (original) and your existing licence.
  3. Inform the counter that you want to renew your driving licence (perbaharui lesen memandu).
  4. Pay the fee. Payment by cash or card depending on the branch.
  5. Receive your renewal receipt. The JPJ system updates immediately.
MySikap agents: JPJ-registered MySikap agents (driving schools, selected petrol stations, and other agents) can also process licence renewals. Look for the MySikap logo at driving academies and JPJ-registered outlets.

Driving Licence Renewal Fees (2026)

Fees apply per licence class. Most private drivers hold Class D (motor car) and/or B2/B (motorcycle). You can hold multiple classes — each is renewed on the same licence card at the same time.

Licence ClassVehicles Covered3-Year Fee5-Year Fee
D (lesen kereta)Private motor car (manual & auto)RM30RM50
DAAuto-transmission car onlyRM30RM50
BMotorcycle above 250ccRM30RM50
B2Motorcycle up to 250ccRM30RM50
C1Light goods vehicle (3.5–7.5 tonnes)RM50RM80
CHeavy goods vehicle (>7.5 tonnes)RM50RM80
E1Light bus / minibusRM50RM80
EBus / express busRM50RM80
GDLGoods Driving Licence (commercial)RM50RM80
Multiple classes, one fee? No — fees are charged per class. If you hold both Class D and Class B2, you pay the fee for each class. However, since all classes appear on a single licence card, the renewal is processed together at one transaction. Fees are cumulative.
Replacement card fee: If you want a new physical driving licence card (e.g., your old card is worn, your address changed, or you want a card with a current photo), the replacement fee is approximately RM20 at JPJ counters. Online renewal via MyJPJ does not issue a new physical card — you get a digital licence in the app.

What If My Licence Has Expired?

Expired Less Than 3 Years — Renew Normally

If your licence has been expired for less than 3 years, you can renew it through the normal channels above (MyJPJ app, JPJ counter, or Pos Malaysia) without any additional test or examination. You will pay the standard renewal fee. There is no late penalty fee for a lapsed licence — you simply lose the time you didn't renew.

Driving with an expired licence is an offence under the Road Transport Act 1987. A compound (saman) of up to RM300 can be issued for driving without a valid licence. In court, the fine can be higher. Do not drive until your licence is renewed.

Expired More Than 3 Years — Re-examination Required

If your driving licence has been expired for more than 3 years, you cannot simply renew it. Under JPJ regulations, your licence is considered lapsed and you must go through the licensing process again — starting from the computerised theory test (KPP exam). This is the same requirement for first-time licence applicants.

3-year rule: Let your licence lapse for over 3 years and you lose it entirely. The process to re-obtain it is identical to getting a brand new licence — driving school, theory test, practical test. Don't let it expire and forget about it.

Probationary Licence (P) — Special Rules

If you're on a Probationary (P) licence, the renewal rules are slightly different.

For Online Renewal (MyJPJ App)

For JPJ Counter / Pos Malaysia

No photo needed for renewal. Unlike the initial licence application, licence renewal does not require a new photograph unless you are also requesting a replacement physical card. In that case, JPJ will take your photo at the counter.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I drive immediately after renewing online via MyJPJ?
Yes. Once payment is confirmed in the MyJPJ app, your licence is updated in JPJ's central database immediately. You can legally drive straight away. Traffic police and JPJ enforcement check the database in real time — they do not need to see a physical card. Keep your payment receipt in the app as a backup.
My licence expired 4 years ago. Can I still renew it?
No — if your licence has been expired for more than 3 years, it is considered permanently lapsed under JPJ regulations. You must restart the full licensing process: enrol at a driving school, pass the KPP computerised theory test (Kurikulum Pendidikan Pemandu), then pass the JPJ practical test (JPJ undur and circuit test). This applies to both Class D (car) and Class B/B2 (motorcycle).
I hold both Class D and Class B2. Do I renew them separately?
No — if both classes are on the same licence card, they are renewed together in a single transaction. You pay the fee for each class (e.g., RM30 for Class D + RM30 for Class B2 = RM60 for a 3-year renewal), but it is one process, one receipt, and one licence. Both class expiry dates are updated simultaneously.
What is the difference between Class D and Class DA?
Class D covers all private motor cars — both manual and automatic transmission. Class DA is a restricted licence for automatic transmission only. If you hold Class DA and want to drive a manual car, you need to upgrade to Class D by passing a manual transmission practical test at JPJ. Most Malaysians who learn to drive in an automatic vehicle are issued Class DA first; upgrading later requires a separate test but no re-sitting of the theory exam.
Do I need to renew my licence if I'm overseas?
You can renew online via the MyJPJ app from overseas — you just need your IC number, a Malaysian-registered phone number for OTP, and a payment method. If your Malaysian phone number is no longer active, renewal online becomes difficult. In that case, you may need to have a family member renew on your behalf at a JPJ counter (with a letter of authorisation and a copy of your IC), or wait until you return to Malaysia. Note: your Malaysian licence is generally not valid for driving in foreign countries anyway — check with that country's licensing authority.
Can I renew for 1 year instead of 3 or 5 years?
Yes, 1-year renewal is available at JPJ counters and Pos Malaysia branches, though the fee is proportionally higher per year than the 3-year or 5-year option. The 1-year option is less commonly advertised but is useful if you're relocating abroad soon or planning to stop driving. The MyJPJ app may not offer all renewal period options — check at a counter if you specifically need a 1-year term.
What happens if I get caught driving with an expired licence?
Driving without a valid driving licence is an offence under Section 26 of the Road Transport Act 1987. The compound (out-of-court settlement) is typically RM300. If the case goes to court, the maximum fine is significantly higher. Additionally, your vehicle insurance may be invalidated for any accident that occurs while you're driving with an expired licence — meaning you're personally liable for all damages. Renew before you drive.
