Renew online, not at an agent. Price aggregators like PolicyStreet and Bjak show you the exact same premiums as going directly to the insurer — but let you compare multiple quotes side by side. No advantage to using a physical agent for standard renewals.
What You Need Before You Start
- Vehicle registration number (plate number — e.g. WXY 1234)
- Engine capacity (cc) — found on your grant (vehicle ownership certificate) or existing policy
- MyKad number — the policyholder's
- Current NCD percentage — shown on your expiring policy or MyJPJ app
- Current policy expiry date — so you know when to start the new policy
- Sum insured (market value) — your preferred coverage amount; your existing policy will show last year's sum insured
Step-by-Step: Renew Online
- Check your current NCD percentage. Your NCD (No-Claim Discount) is the most important factor in your premium. It's shown on your existing policy cover note. You can also check via the MyJPJ app (eInsurance section) or call your current insurer. Never misrepresent your NCD — doing so voids your policy.
- Go to a comparison platform. Enter your vehicle registration number and IC number at PolicyStreet, Bjak, or myeg.com.my/motor. The platform will auto-populate your vehicle details from JPJ and ISM (Insurance Services Malaysia) databases.
- Review and confirm your vehicle details. Verify engine CC, year of manufacture, seating capacity, and your current NCD. If any details are wrong, correct them — an incorrect sum insured or NCD results in premium discrepancy and potential claim rejection.
- Choose your coverage type. Select comprehensive (recommended for cars under 10 years old), third-party fire & theft, or third-party only. See the coverage comparison table below.
- Set your sum insured. This is the agreed value of your car. Most platforms suggest a market value — you can adjust it up or down. Too low = underinsured; too high = higher premium for little benefit. Use the platform's suggested value unless you have a reason to deviate.
- Select add-ons (endorsements). Windscreen and special perils are almost always worth adding — see the add-ons table. Review costs and add what makes sense for your situation.
- Compare quotes across insurers. Prices vary by insurer for the same coverage. Etiqa, Allianz, Zurich, Tokio Marine, and RHB Insurance are common choices — compare premiums and not just the cheapest headline price. Check the insurer's panel workshop network and claims reputation.
- Enter policyholder and nominee details. Provide your full name, MyKad, address, and mobile number. Nominate a beneficiary (for personal accident coverage). Double-check all details — errors cause claim complications.
- Pay online. Most platforms accept FPX (online banking), Visa/Mastercard, and major e-wallets. You will receive an immediate cover note upon successful payment.
- Download your cover note. Save it immediately — you need it for road tax renewal if doing road tax at the same time. Your full policy document will be emailed within 1–3 business days.
Platform Comparison
| Platform | Insurers | Best For |
| PolicyStreet | 10+ insurers | Widest insurer selection, clean UI, good for comparing add-ons |
| Bjak | 10+ insurers | Fast quote process, competitive prices, popular for Grab/e-hailing top-up |
| MyEG Motor | Select insurers | Simultaneous road tax + insurance renewal in one transaction |
| Insurer direct (e.g. Etiqa, Allianz) | That insurer only | Existing policyholders; no comparison but faster if you know what you want |
All platforms sell the same regulated products at the same base premium. Differences come from which insurers they partner with and how add-ons are bundled.
Coverage Types Explained
| Coverage | What's Covered | Best For |
| Comprehensive | Own damage (accident, fire, theft) + third-party liability + passenger liability | Cars under 10 years old; financed vehicles (required by banks) |
| Third-Party, Fire & Theft | Fire, theft + third-party liability only (no own-damage cover) | Older cars where own-damage repair cost exceeds insurance value |
| Third-Party Only | Third-party liability only — covers damage you cause to others | Very old cars (below RM20,000 market value); minimum legal requirement |
Add-Ons Worth Considering
| Add-On | Typical Cost | Recommended? |
| Windscreen | RM50–150/year | Yes — windscreen replacements cost RM300–1,500+; this pays for itself after one claim |
| Special Perils (flood, landslide, storm) | ~0.5% of sum insured | Yes — especially if you park outdoors or live in flood-prone areas |
| Personal Accident (PA) | RM20–80/year | Yes if you don't have separate PA insurance; covers death/disability while driving |
| Legal Liability to Passengers | RM5–15/year | Yes — protects you if a passenger claims against you after an accident |
| Unlimited Towing | RM20–50/year | Optional — handy if you travel long distances |
| NCD Protector | Varies | Only if your NCD is 55% — protects it after one claim. Not worth it for lower NCD bands. |
NCD (No-Claim Discount) Rates
NCD is the biggest discount on your premium. It increases each claim-free year and resets to 0% if you make an own-damage (OD) claim.
| Years Claim-Free | NCD (Private Car) |
| 1st year (new policy) | 0% |
| After 1 year no claim | 25% |
| After 2 years no claim | 30% |
| After 3 years no claim | 38.33% |
| After 4 years no claim | 45% |
| After 5+ years no claim | 55% (maximum) |
NCD stays with the named policyholder, not the car. If you sell your car and buy a new one, your NCD transfers.
NCD resets to 0% after any own-damage claim. For minor damages under RM2,000–3,000, it is often cheaper to pay out of pocket rather than claim and lose your NCD — especially if your NCD is 38%+. Calculate before claiming.
Pro Tips — What Most People Miss
- Never let insurance lapse. Driving with expired insurance is illegal and your NCD resets. Renew at least a week before expiry. If it has already lapsed, renew immediately — each extra day adds risk.
- Renew 2 months early without penalty. You can renew up to 2 months before your policy expires — your new policy starts from your existing expiry date, not from today. No overlap, no loss of coverage period.
- Sum insured matters for total loss claims. If your car is written off or stolen, you receive the sum insured minus excess (RM400–1,000 typically). Set it to the actual market value — not too low to avoid under-compensation.
- Panel vs non-panel workshops. Comprehensive insurance pays in full at panel workshops. Non-panel workshops require you to pay upfront and claim reimbursement — and you may only recover 80–90%. Check your insurer's panel network before committing.
- Takaful vs conventional insurance. Both offer equivalent coverage. Takaful is the Islamic finance equivalent — contributions go into a shared pool and any surplus is potentially returned. Premium differences are minimal; choose based on preference.
- E-hailing endorsement if you drive Grab/Gojek. A standard personal car policy does not cover you while doing e-hailing. You need a commercial or e-hailing endorsement — Bjak and PolicyStreet offer this add-on.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I switch insurers when renewing?
Yes — you are not obligated to stay with the same insurer. Your NCD transfers with you. When you switch, the new insurer verifies your NCD with ISM (Insurance Services Malaysia) — the industry NCD database. Simply choose a different insurer on any comparison platform.
Do I need to renew car insurance and road tax together?
You need a valid insurance cover note to renew road tax — but they don't have to be done simultaneously. Renew insurance first (and get your cover note), then renew road tax via MyJPJ or MyEG. If you use MyEG for insurance renewal, you can do both in a single transaction.
Is it safe to buy car insurance online?
Yes — platforms like PolicyStreet and Bjak are BNM-regulated insurance aggregators. They are authorised to sell products from licensed Malaysian insurers. Your cover note and policy are issued directly by the insurer and are legally valid.
What if I made a mistake on the policy details?
Contact the insurer or platform's customer service immediately with your policy number. Minor corrections (address, contact number) are usually free. Changes that affect the premium (vehicle CC, sum insured) may require a new quotation. Do not wait until a claim to discover an error.
What is the difference between agreed value and market value?
In Malaysia, most car insurance uses "agreed value" — the sum insured you agree on at policy inception. In a total loss, you receive the agreed value minus excess. Market value is just a reference for what the car would fetch at sale. Keep your agreed value close to realistic market value to avoid being underinsured or overpaying in premium.
Can I add a named driver to my policy?
Yes — most comprehensive policies cover any licensed driver with your permission, but adding named drivers can affect premium. Check with your insurer. Unnamed young or new drivers (holding P licence) who cause accidents may result in claim rejection or reduced payout — check your policy schedule.
