Overview: Malaysia's Urban Rail & Bus Network

The Klang Valley (Kuala Lumpur and surroundings) has one of the most extensive urban rail networks in Southeast Asia — operated by multiple agencies across several lines. If you're new to it, the different names and operators can be confusing. Here's how it breaks down:

Ampang/Sri Petaling LRT
Prasarana (Rapid KL)
Two branches merging at Masjid Jamek. Covers Ampang, Cheras, Puchong, Sri Petaling, and into KL city centre.
Kelana Jaya LRT
Prasarana (Rapid KL)
KL city centre to Kelana Jaya and Putra Heights. Passes KLCC, KL Sentral, Subang, and Shah Alam.
Putrajaya MRT (Laluan Putrajaya)
Prasarana (Rapid KL)
Kwasa Damansara to Putrajaya Sentral. Covers Kepong, Sentul, Titiwangsa, KLCC, Bukit Bintang, Muzium Negara.
Kajang MRT (Laluan Kajang)
Prasarana (Rapid KL)
Sungai Buloh to Putrajaya/Kajang. Covers Damansara, Semantan, KL Sentral, Bukit Chagar, Kajang.
KTM Komuter
KTM (Keretapi Tanah Melayu)
Commuter rail covering greater KV. Klang–Batu Caves, Port Klang–Tanjung Malim. Longer distances, lower fares per km.
KL Monorail
Prasarana (Rapid KL)
Short line in KL city: KL Sentral to Titiwangsa. 11 stations. Good for Bukit Bintang and Chow Kit access.
ERL / KLIA Ekspres
ERL (Express Rail Link)
KL Sentral to KLIA / KLIA2. Premium airport express. Separate fare system — not Rapid KL.
Rapid KL Bus
Prasarana (Rapid KL)
Extensive bus network across KV. Feeder buses connect rail stations to residential areas. Flat fare: RM1.00 within zones, RM0.70 for some routes.
Outside Klang Valley: Penang has Rapid Penang (buses + CAT free bus in Georgetown). Johor Bahru has Rapid JB. Kuching has City Public Link buses. KL's rail network does not extend to other states.

How to Pay: Touch 'n Go Card (Kad Touch 'n Go)

The Touch 'n Go (TNG) card is the standard payment method for all Prasarana rail and bus services in the Klang Valley, as well as KTM Komuter. It is a contactless stored-value card (not to be confused with the Touch 'n Go eWallet — see below).

Physical Touch 'n Go Card vs TNG eWallet

Physical TNG Card TNG eWallet (NFC)
What it is Contactless plastic card Phone app with NFC tap-to-pay
Works on rail gates? Yes — all Rapid KL and KTM Yes, if phone has NFC and eWallet is set up
Also works for Highways (PLUS tolls), car parks Online payments, P2P transfer, bills
Where to buy/reload 7-Eleven, Petronas, convenience stores, KTM/Rapid KL stations, MyNews Download app, link to bank account
Card cost RM10 (includes RM5 initial value, RM5 non-refundable deposit) Free (app download)
Lost card Balance lost (card not registered to your name) Balance protected (tied to your account)
Recommendation: If you use public transport daily, get a physical TNG card for transit and keep the TNG eWallet for online payments and money transfers. The eWallet's NFC works on transit gates, but battery dependence is a real risk.

How to Top Up Your TNG Card (Cara Tambah Nilai)

Minimum top-up: RM10. Maximum balance on card: RM600.

Checking Your TNG Balance

Keep at least RM3–5 on your card. If your card balance is too low to complete a journey, the gate will reject you on exit and you may need to pay a penalty fare at the customer service counter. Always top up before you run out.

Fares by Line

Fares are distance-based on most rail lines. The longer the trip, the higher the fare. All fares are correct as of March 2026.

Rapid KL Rail (LRT + MRT + Monorail)

Distance / Journey Fare (Adult)
1–3 stations (short) RM1.00–RM2.00
4–8 stations (medium) RM2.00–RM4.00
Long-distance (e.g. Ampang to Putra Heights) RM4.50–RM6.50
Maximum single journey fare RM9.50

KTM Komuter

Journey Example Approx. Fare
KL Sentral → Midvalley RM1.00
KL Sentral → Subang Jaya RM2.30
KL Sentral → Klang RM5.00
KL Sentral → Batu Caves RM2.60
KL Sentral → Port Klang RM5.60
KL Sentral → Tanjung Malim RM10.60

Rapid KL Bus

Service Fare
Rapid KL Bus (standard routes) RM1.00 flat fare (within zone)
BRT Sunway Line RM0.70 flat fare (within BRT zone)
Gombak / Rawang / outskirt feeder RM1.00–RM3.00

KLIA Ekspres (Airport)

Route Fare (Adult)
KL Sentral → KLIA RM35
KL Sentral → KLIA2 RM35
KL Sentral → KL Midtown (Salak Tinggi) RM10
Children's fares: Children under 90 cm in height travel free on Rapid KL rail and bus. Children 90 cm–12 years pay half fare. Bring ID if asked.

Monthly Passes: PULSE (Prasarana Urban Link Subscription for Everyone)

If you commute daily, a monthly pass will save you significantly compared to paying per trip. Prasarana's PULSE pass gives unlimited rides within defined zones for a fixed monthly fee.

PULSE Pass Types

Pass Type Coverage Monthly Price
PULSE Rail (30 days) Unlimited trips on all Rapid KL rail lines (LRT + MRT + Monorail) RM100
PULSE Bus (30 days) Unlimited trips on all Rapid KL bus routes RM30
PULSE Rail + Bus (30 days) Unlimited trips on all Rapid KL rail AND bus RM120

Is a PULSE Pass Worth It?

If you commute 5 days a week on rail, you make roughly 20 round trips per month. A typical mid-length rail journey is RM3.00 each way = RM6.00 return × 20 days = RM120 per month without a pass. The PULSE Rail pass costs RM100 — saving RM20. The longer your commute, the more you save.

Best for: Daily commuters who take LRT/MRT 4+ days a week. The pass pays for itself in about 17 days for a standard 5-day commute. After day 17, every ride is free.

How to Buy a PULSE Pass

Note: PULSE passes cover Rapid KL services only. They do NOT cover KTM Komuter (different operator). If you take KTM, you will still pay per trip even with a PULSE pass. KTM has its own monthly pass (see below).

KTM Monthly Season Ticket (Tiket Musim KTM)

KTM Komuter offers its own monthly pass called Tiket Musim. It covers unlimited KTM Komuter trips between two fixed stations (your origin and destination).

Journey Monthly Season Ticket Price
KL Sentral → Subang Jaya ~RM46
KL Sentral → Klang ~RM100
KL Sentral → Batu Caves ~RM52

Buy at any KTM Komuter station counter. You need your MyKad or passport. The ticket is issued as a printed card or can be loaded onto a TNG card at certain locations.

Concession Cards: Students, Senior Citizens & OKU

If you are a student, senior citizen (60+), or a person with disability (OKU), you are entitled to half-price (50%) discounted fares on Rapid KL rail and bus services.

MyRapid Concession Card (Kad Konsesi MyRapid)

Who Qualifies Discount Proof Required
Students (primary, secondary, pre-university) 50% off all fares Student ID (Kad Pelajar) from school/institution + MyKad/Birth certificate
Senior citizens (60 years and above) 50% off all fares MyKad (age verified from IC number)
OKU (Orang Kurang Upaya / Persons with Disability) 50% off all fares OKU card (Kad OKU) issued by JKM

How to Get a MyRapid Concession Card

Concession cards are personal and non-transferable. Using someone else's concession card is fraud and can result in penalties. Each person in your family must have their own concession card.

Concession for KTM Komuter

KTM also offers concession fares for students and senior citizens. Apply at any KTM Komuter station counter with the same documents. KTM concession cards are separate from Rapid KL concession cards.

Journey Planning Apps

MyRapid (Official Prasarana App)

The official app for Rapid KL. Use it to plan journeys on LRT, MRT, Monorail, and bus; buy PULSE passes; check real-time arrival information; and reload your TNG card (if registered). Available on iOS and Android.

Google Maps

Google Maps has reasonably accurate Klang Valley public transport routes and times. It covers rail and bus. Good for quick journey planning when you're unfamiliar with an area. Not always up-to-date with service disruptions.

Moovit

Crowdsourced public transport app with good KV coverage. Often has more up-to-date bus route information than Google Maps for Malaysia. Available on iOS and Android.

KTM Mobile

KTM Berhad's official app for KTM Komuter and intercity train schedules, fare checking, and seat booking for intercity services. Essential if you use KTM regularly.

Pro tip: Use the MyRapid app for route planning on Rapid KL. Use KTM Mobile for KTM journeys. Use Google Maps for quick door-to-door directions that combine both.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use the Touch 'n Go eWallet (on my phone) instead of a physical card at rail gates?
Yes, if your phone has NFC capability and you have set up the TNG eWallet with NFC enabled. Open the eWallet app, tap "Go" to activate the transit feature, and tap your phone at the gate. Not all Android phones support this — iPhones with TNG eWallet NFC support are more recent. If your phone runs out of battery, you won't be able to tap out, so keep a physical TNG card as backup if you rely on the eWallet for daily commuting.
I forgot to tap out and was charged the maximum fare. What do I do?
Go to the customer service counter at any Rapid KL station before you leave the building, or as soon as possible. Explain what happened and they will check your transaction record and refund the difference if the error is clear. If you only noticed later, you can also call Rapid KL at 1-800-38-7787 or submit a refund request at myrapid.com.my. Keep your receipt or note the time and station for reference.
Does the PULSE monthly pass cover the KLIA Ekspres?
No. KLIA Ekspres is operated by ERL (Express Rail Link), which is a completely separate company from Prasarana. PULSE passes only cover Rapid KL rail (LRT, MRT, Monorail) and/or Rapid KL bus. You pay separately for KLIA Ekspres regardless of whether you have a PULSE pass.
Can tourists use the same Touch 'n Go card and pay the same fares as locals?
Yes. A physical Touch 'n Go card can be purchased at any convenience store or station and used by anyone regardless of nationality. Fares are the same. Tourist rail passes (unlimited travel for 1–3 days) are sometimes available at KL Sentral — ask at the customer service counter. Concession fares (50% discount) are only for Malaysian residents with valid cards.
How do I get from KL Sentral to KLIA / KLIA2?
The fastest option is the KLIA Ekspres — 28 minutes to KLIA, 33 minutes to KLIA2, RM35 each way. Buy tickets at the KLIA Ekspres counters inside KL Sentral (not the regular Rapid KL counters). The KLIA Transit makes additional stops (Bandar Tasik Selatan, Putrajaya/Cyberjaya, Salak Tinggi) and takes about 55 minutes — cheaper at RM35 to KLIA but slower. Budget taxis take 45–70 minutes depending on traffic, Grab costs RM45–60+.
My Touch 'n Go card is damaged or lost. Can I get a refund?
For a damaged card: bring it to any TNG service centre or selected Rapid KL counters. If the chip is still readable, they can transfer the balance to a new card. If completely unreadable, recovery is difficult. For a lost card: if your card was not registered to your name, the balance is gone permanently — this is the main risk of unregistered cards. If your card was registered (via the TNG app), the remaining balance can be recovered — call TNG at 1-300-88-8088 or visit a service centre. This is a strong reason to register your TNG card after purchase.
What is the difference between Rapid KL, KTM, and ERL — are they the same?
No, they are three separate companies. Rapid KL (operated by Prasarana) runs the LRT lines, MRT lines, KL Monorail, and Rapid KL bus. KTM (Keretapi Tanah Melayu) runs KTM Komuter (suburban commuter rail) and intercity trains. ERL (Express Rail Link) runs KLIA Ekspres and KLIA Transit. Each company has its own fares and ticketing system, though all accept Touch 'n Go payment. Monthly passes (PULSE for Rapid KL, Tiket Musim for KTM) are not interchangeable.
Are trains running during public holidays?
Yes. Rapid KL rail and bus operates 7 days a week including public holidays, typically from around 6am to midnight. On public holidays, trains often run on a reduced schedule (similar to weekends). KTM Komuter also operates on public holidays with adjusted schedules. Check the MyRapid app or Rapid KL social media for service alerts on major holidays like Hari Raya and Chinese New Year, when schedules may change.
Disclaimer: Fares, pass prices, and schedules are correct as of March 2026 and are subject to change. Always verify current fares with Rapid KL (myrapid.com.my), KTM (ktmb.com.my), or ERL (kliaekspres.com) before travel. This guide is not affiliated with any transport operator or government agency.
