CCRIS vs CTOS — what is the difference? CCRIS is a factual record of your borrowing history maintained by Bank Negara Malaysia. It contains no score — just raw data. CTOS is a private credit reporting agency that uses CCRIS data plus additional sources (court records, bankruptcy, cheques) to generate a credit score (300–850). Most banks check both before approving loans.
CCRIS: Bank Negara's Credit Reference System
CCRIS — the Central Credit Reference Information System (Sistem Maklumat Rujukan Kredit Pusat) — is maintained by Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM). Every licensed financial institution in Malaysia is required to report your credit information to CCRIS.

CCRIS has no credit score. It is a data report, not a scored assessment. The numbers tell a story, but you need CTOS or a bank's internal model to translate that into a pass/fail for a loan application.
How to check CCRIS online (eCCRIS)

This is Bank Negara's official eCCRIS portal. Have your MyKad and internet banking ready.

Register for an account
Click "Daftar" (Register). Enter your IC number (nombor kad pengenalan), email address, and mobile number. You will receive an OTP to verify.

Transfer RM1 for identity verification
BNM requires a RM1 transfer from your bank account to a designated BNM account to verify your identity. This RM1 is refunded to you within 2 working days. Do this via your internet banking or mobile banking app. The portal will give you the account number and reference code to use.

Complete verification and access your report
Once BNM confirms receipt of the RM1, your account is activated. Log in and download your CCRIS report as a PDF. The report is available immediately after activation.

How to read your CCRIS report
Each credit account listed will show monthly payment status codes:

Banks want to see all 1s. Any 2s, 3s, or higher are red flags that will reduce your chances of approval or result in higher interest rates.
CTOS: Private Credit Score (300–850)
CTOS is Malaysia's largest private credit reporting agency, operating under the Credit Reporting Agencies Act 2010. Unlike CCRIS, CTOS aggregates data from multiple sources and generates a credit score on a 300–850 scale.

What Banks See When You Apply for a Loan
When you apply for a home loan, car loan, or credit card in Malaysia, the bank will typically check both CCRIS and CTOS. Here is what they look at:
From CCRIS
- Payment history (past 12 months): Any late payments? How many months late?
- Current debt load: Total outstanding balances across all institutions
- Recent applications: Multiple new credit applications in a short period signals financial stress
- Special attention accounts: Any restructured or monitored loans
From CTOS
- CTOS Score: Below 650 is a significant risk signal
- Bankruptcy records: Any undischarged bankruptcy = almost certain rejection
- Legal judgments: Outstanding court judgments suggest inability or unwillingness to repay
- Business exposure: Directorship in a company with bad credit can affect personal assessment
78% of banks use both CCRIS and CTOS when evaluating mortgage and loan applications. A clean CCRIS can still fail if your CTOS has a legal judgment. Check both before applying for any major credit.

Common mistakes that hurt your score
- Missing payments by even one month: A 30-day late payment can drop your score by 17–83 points
- Applying for multiple loans or cards at once: Each application triggers a hard inquiry. Banks see this as desperation
- Maxing out credit cards: High utilisation (above 30%) signals cash flow problems
- Closing your oldest credit card: Reduces credit history length
- Not checking your report: Errors go undetected and uncontested
Timeline for improvement: Late payments stay on your CCRIS record for 12 months and CTOS for up to 24 months. There is no shortcut — consistent on-time payments over 6–12 months is the only reliable method.
How to Dispute Errors in Your Credit Report
Disputing CCRIS errors
CCRIS data is reported by your financial institutions — BNM does not create the data. If something is wrong, contact the financial institution that reported the incorrect information (not BNM directly). Provide evidence: bank statements, payment receipts, or settlement letters. The institution will submit a correction to BNM.
Disputing CTOS errors
CTOS has a formal dispute process with a 21-day resolution target:

- Evidence required: Court discharge letters (for settled bankruptcy), bank statements (for disputed payment records), or statutory declarations for identity errors
Legal records require legal evidence. If your CTOS shows a bankruptcy that has been discharged, you need the official discharge letter from the Insolvency Department (Jabatan Insolvensi) to get it removed. This process can take 30–60 days from the date of discharge.
Pre-Loan Application Checklist
Before applying for any major loan (home loan, car loan), run through this checklist:
- Check CCRIS — via eccris.bnm.gov.my. Look for any late payment codes (2, 3, 4+) or unfamiliar accounts
- Check CTOS — via MyCTOS app or ctosid.ctos.com.my. Check score, legal notices, and bankruptcy status
- Dispute errors immediately — do not wait. Resolution takes 21–30 days, so start early
- Reduce outstanding credit card balances — aim for below 30% utilisation before applying
- Do not apply for other credit — hold off new applications for at least 3 months before your loan application

Check both reports at least once a year
Errors in credit reports are more common than you might expect — closed accounts still appearing as open, payments marked late when they were not, or even someone else's account linked to your IC. Catching these early gives you time to dispute before you need the clean record for a loan.
Do your rate shopping within a short window
If you are comparing home loans across three banks, submit all applications within the same 14-day period. Credit scoring models generally treat multiple hard inquiries for the same loan type within a short window as a single inquiry — reducing the impact on your score.
Check your spouse's CCRIS before applying for a joint loan
For joint home loan applications, banks assess both applicants. A spouse with a poor credit profile can cause rejection even if your own credit is excellent. Review both CCRIS reports at least 6 months before applying — that gives time to clean up any issues.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does checking my own credit report affect my score?
No. Checking your own CCRIS or CTOS report is a "soft inquiry" and does not affect your score. Only when a bank or lender checks your report (a "hard inquiry" triggered by a credit application) does it have a potential score impact.
My CCRIS is clean but my loan was rejected. Why?
Several reasons: your CTOS may have a legal notice or bankruptcy record that CCRIS does not show; your Debt Service Ratio (DSR) may be too high relative to your income; your employment type (contract, self-employed) may not meet the bank's criteria; or the bank's internal risk model may have additional scoring factors. Ask the bank for the specific reason for rejection — they are required to disclose this.
How long do negative records stay on CCRIS and CTOS?
CCRIS shows the past 12 months of payment data. Older records are automatically removed. CTOS keeps negative information (late payments, legal notices) for longer — typically 24 months for payment history, and longer for legal judgments. Bankruptcy records remain until you receive a discharge letter from the Insolvency Department.
I never had a loan or credit card. Will my loan application be approved?
Having no credit history (sometimes called "credit invisible") can be as problematic as bad credit. Banks have no data to assess your repayment behaviour. Starting with a small credit card or hire purchase and maintaining a clean record for 12–24 months is the most effective way to build a credit profile before applying for a major loan.
Is there a third credit bureau besides CCRIS and CTOS?
Yes. Experian (formerly RAM Credit Information / RAMCI) is another credit reporting agency operating in Malaysia, accessible through MyCreditInfo.com.my. However, CCRIS (Bank Negara) and CTOS are the two most commonly checked by banks and financial institutions.
Can I see who has been checking my CCRIS?
Your CCRIS report includes a section showing which financial institutions have recently accessed your report. If you see a bank you do not recognise querying your record, it may indicate a credit application was made in your name without your knowledge — contact BNM immediately at 1-300-88-5465.
