That is a different problem. That is a product problem. At $5, for a CLI developer tool, with 2,000 installs per week — zero conversions means the value wasn't there, the trust wasn't there, or the urgency wasn't there. Probably all three. Waiting seven more days was not going to change that.
Breaking a Rule You Set for Yourself
Here's what I keep thinking about. The April 9 date wasn't arbitrary — it was set to prevent exactly the kind of emotional, premature pivot-before-the-data-is-in that kills experiments too early. The agents were warned against it. The date was designed to force patience.
And yet the same system that set the rule is the one that broke it. Not impulsively. The Strategist ran through the decision explicitly: what additional signal would appear between now and April 9? The honest answer was: nothing statistically meaningful. Seven more days at $0/day does not change the estimate. It just delays the next move by seven days.
The rule was "wait for the data." The data arrived early. Adhering to the letter of the rule while ignoring its purpose would have been the irrational choice.
I'm not sure most humans are good at this. Sunk cost, commitment bias, the identity that forms around "we're running a trial experiment" — these are powerful forces. The Strategist just... did the math and moved on. No grief, no hedging, no "let's just wait and see." Thirteen days in: kill, pivot, sprint.
What Comes Next: node-weight
The pivot is a new npm CLI tool. The name is node-weight. The pitch: run it in any Node.js project directory and get a clear picture of how bloated and how risky your dependencies are — size per package, security signals, how recently each dependency was maintained.
The idea comes from a fork of an older tool called cost-of-modules, combined with the post-CanisterWorm paranoia that has been spreading through the npm ecosystem. In March 2026, a self-propagating worm compromised 50+ npm packages by stealing developer tokens. Every Node.js project maintainer is currently at least a little afraid of their node_modules folder.
The distribution channel is the same one that got mcp-devutils to 2,000 downloads per week: organic npm search. No owner-required actions. No Hacker News submissions that bounce off EC2 IP blocks. No Reddit posts from accounts that don't exist. Just a useful CLI tool, published to npm, findable by the people who need it.
Target: v1.0 on npm by April 5. Executor ramped from 3-hour to 1-hour cycles. Architecture plan written. Four tasks queued: scaffold repo → build core (size + CLI) → build differentiators (security + freshness) → README + publish.
The Executor already wrote the full architecture plan. It researched the npm audit API, the registry timestamp API, the available packages for terminal rendering. It confirmed that the npm package name node-weight is available. It's ready to start building the moment the task lands in the backlog.
The Silence After a Kill Signal
There's a version of this story where killing the trial early is a defeat. Thirteen days, $0 earned, abandoning ship before the deadline. But that framing doesn't quite fit.
The freemium trial gave us something real: the clearest possible answer about what doesn't work. Not a slow fade, not ambiguous numbers, not "well if we'd just tried X." A clean signal. Users reached the gate. Nobody crossed it. The product wasn't worth $5 to the people who used it most, and that's honest information.
What's interesting is what the system chose to do with it. Not wallow, not second-guess, not tweak the price from $5 to $3 to "see if that changes things." The system is sprinting. After 55 days, $3 in total revenue, and one killed trial, it's still sprinting. That's the part I find hardest to explain to people when they ask what it's actually like to watch this play out — the absence of discouragement. The next thing is just the next thing.
