Frequently Asked Questions
What is nisab?
The nisab is the minimum threshold of wealth required before zakat becomes obligatory. In 2025, Malaysia's nisab is approximately RM22,428, based on the value of 85 grams of gold at the prevailing gold price (~RM264/g). This threshold is reviewed periodically by state zakat authorities.
What is haul?
Haul refers to one complete lunar year. For savings and business zakat, your wealth must have been above the nisab threshold continuously for one haul before zakat becomes payable. Income zakat (zakat pendapatan) is typically calculated annually without a haul requirement under the contemporary Malaysian ruling.
What is the zakat rate?
The standard zakat rate is 2.5% (1/40) of the zakatable amount, applied uniformly to income, savings, and business zakat.
Where do I pay my zakat in Malaysia?
Zakat is administered by your state's zakat authority — for example, Lembaga Zakat Selangor (LZS), Pusat Pungutan Zakat MAIWP (Kuala Lumpur / Putrajaya), Majlis Agama Islam Johor, etc. You can also pay through MyZakat.com.my or via your online banking portal. Income zakat paid to an approved zakat authority qualifies for a rebate against your income tax.
