Malaysian Income Tax — How It Works (YA2025)
Malaysia uses a progressive tax system for resident individuals. Only the portion of income that falls within each bracket is taxed at that rate — so earning more never makes you worse off (the higher rate only applies to the extra ringgit above the threshold, not your entire income).
The tax year runs from 1 January to 31 December. For employment income with no business income, the filing deadline is 30 April 2026 for YA2025. File online via mytax.hasil.gov.my. Most salaried employees already have tax deducted monthly via the PCB (Potongan Cukai Berjadual) scheme.
Key Reliefs to Claim
Self relief (RM9,000): Automatically given to every resident individual — no receipts needed.
EPF + Life Insurance (RM7,000 combined): Your EPF contributions are deductible — check your EA form. Voluntary top-ups count too.
Medical insurance (RM3,000): Premiums for medical/education insurance for self, spouse, or children.
Medical expenses (RM8,000): Serious illness treatment, fertility, vaccination, and dental fees for self, spouse, and parents.
Monthly Tax Deduction (PCB)
If you're a salaried employee, your employer withholds PCB monthly based on your salary and declared reliefs. You can submit a TP1 form to your HR to update your relief claims mid-year. Any over-deduction is refunded when you file; any under-deduction is a balance payable.
